“I am truly blessed for him still being here with us today,” reads a GoFundMe launched by Amina Gai, whose father, Baboucarr Gai, was shot while driving a cab on West Washington Street on Thursday, Jan. 25.

“He was picking up a customer in the Annapolis location,” writes Amina. “Upon arriving to the pick up location, the customer and my father got into a verbal altercation which resulted in the guy pulling out a gun on my father. He was shot in the head and in the right hand.”

Amina’s father was the rushed to the emergency room for immediate surgery, though doctors were unable to remove the bullet from his right hand, the campaign says.

While in stable condition, Gai must now undergo the “very difficult procedure of removing the bullet,” Amina writes.

More than $1,500 had been raised for Gai’s recovery as of Wednesday, Jan. 31.

Meanwhile, a warrant has been issued for the arrest of a suspect, John Simms, Jr., 35, of Annapolis, police said. He is charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault.

“Any donation helps and is greatly appreciated,” writes Amina.
